What is a random Pokémon generator?
A random Pokémon generator picks Pokémon for you at random from the National Pokédex. Press Generate and this tool draws one Pokémon – or a full team of six, or up to 30 – from all 1,025 species, from Bulbasaur to Pecharunt. Every result shows the Pokédex number, types, generation and region, base stat total, evolution stage, height and weight.
It is built for the ways people really use a random Pokémon picker: making a random team for a Nuzlocke or randomizer run, choosing a Pokémon to draw, starting a monotype challenge, settling which starter to pick, setting a “catch this next” goal in Pokémon GO or Scarlet and Violet, or just discovering Pokémon you have never heard of. Filters let you limit the draw to certain generations, types, evolution stages or stat ranges, and you can include or leave out legendary, mythical and baby Pokémon.
The same tool also works as a Pokémon wheel (a spinning roulette of Pokémon from your filter) and as a random Pokémon type generator (a wheel of all 18 types). When you generate a team, a Team check uses the real type chart to show which attacking types your team is weak to and how many types your team can hit super-effectively.
How to use the random Pokémon maker
- Set your filters (optional). All nine generations and all types are included by default. Tap generations to switch them off, tap type buttons to limit the types, and choose an evolution stage or a minimum base stat total. The box under the filters shows how many Pokémon match and the exact chance of each one.
- Choose how many. One Pokémon, a team of six, or up to 30. All Pokémon in one result are different.
- Press Generate (or press the Space bar on a computer).
- Read the Team check. For teams of two or more you get the average base stat total, how many of the 18 types are on your team, how many types your team's same-type (STAB) moves hit super-effectively, and a defence grid showing how many team members are weak to or resist each attacking type.
- Try the wheels. The Pokémon wheel spins a set of Pokémon from your filter; the Type wheel picks one of the 18 types and can send that type straight to the generator.
Every generation in the generator
The generator covers all nine generations. Because each Pokémon has the same chance, bigger generations come up more often: a single pick lands on Unova 15.2% of the time but on Kalos only 7.0% of the time. If you want each generation to have an equal chance, pick a generation first, then generate.
| Gen | Region | Main games | Pokémon | Legendary + mythical | Chance per pick |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gen 1 | Kanto | Red, Blue & Yellow | 151 | 5 | 14.7% |
| Gen 2 | Johto | Gold, Silver & Crystal | 100 | 6 | 9.8% |
| Gen 3 | Hoenn | Ruby, Sapphire & Emerald | 135 | 10 | 13.2% |
| Gen 4 | Sinnoh | Diamond, Pearl & Platinum | 107 | 14 | 10.4% |
| Gen 5 | Unova | Black & White / Black 2 & White 2 | 156 | 13 | 15.2% |
| Gen 6 | Kalos | X & Y | 72 | 6 | 7.0% |
| Gen 7 | Alola | Sun & Moon / Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon | 88 | 16 | 8.6% |
| Gen 8 | Galar | Sword & Shield / Legends: Arceus | 96 | 12 | 9.4% |
| Gen 9 | Paldea | Scarlet & Violet | 120 | 12 | 11.7% |
Counts are new species introduced in each generation, from PokéAPI data. Hisui Pokémon from Legends: Arceus (such as Wyrdeer and Kleavor) count as Generation 8.
Random Pokémon by type
Use the type buttons to get a random Water-type, a random Dragon-type, or any mix. The table shows how many Pokémon have each type (dual-type Pokémon count for both of their types), how many are pure single-type, and the chance that a single unfiltered pick has that type.
| Type | Pokémon with this type | Pure type | Chance per pick |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water | 154 | 74 | 15.0% |
| Normal | 131 | 75 | 12.8% |
| Grass | 127 | 47 | 12.4% |
| Flying | 109 | 3 | 10.6% |
| Psychic | 102 | 39 | 10.0% |
| Bug | 92 | 23 | 9.0% |
| Poison | 83 | 16 | 8.1% |
| Fire | 81 | 36 | 7.9% |
| Ground | 75 | 17 | 7.3% |
| Rock | 74 | 17 | 7.2% |
| Fighting | 73 | 28 | 7.1% |
| Dragon | 70 | 13 | 6.8% |
| Electric | 69 | 35 | 6.7% |
| Dark | 69 | 13 | 6.7% |
| Steel | 65 | 10 | 6.3% |
| Ghost | 65 | 16 | 6.3% |
| Fairy | 64 | 21 | 6.2% |
| Ice | 48 | 16 | 4.7% |
Water is the most common type and Ice the rarest. 526 Pokémon (51.3%) have two types and 499 have one. The most common type pair is Flying / Normal (27 Pokémon), and 21 type pairs belong to just one Pokémon each – for example Dark/Rock, Bug/Ground, Bug/Ghost, Steel/Water. Types are the current ones, so older Pokémon such as Clefairy and Jigglypuff show as Fairy.
The random type wheel
The Type wheel spins one of the 18 types with equal odds (1 in 18, or 5.6%). When it stops, it tells you how many Pokémon have that type, which types its moves are super effective against, and which types it is weak to. Press Generate this type to get random Pokémon of that type straight away – great for monotype challenges.
Filters for evolution, stats and special Pokémon
Evolution stage
- Fully evolved – 568 Pokémon that cannot evolve any further, including those that never evolve. Best for battle teams.
- First stage (can evolve) – 340 Pokémon at the start of an evolution line, such as Charmander or Gible. Best for playthroughs and Nuzlockes, where you raise your team.
- Doesn't evolve – 201 Pokémon with no evolution at all, such as Tauros, Lapras and most legendaries.
Base stat total (BST)
The base stat total adds a Pokémon's six base stats (HP, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense and Speed). The average across all 1,025 Pokémon is 428. 60 Pokémon have a BST of 600 or more – mostly legendaries and pseudo-legendaries such as Dragonite, Tyranitar and Garchomp. Use the “Under 400” option for a challenge run with weak Pokémon. The highest totals are:
| No. | Pokémon | Type | BST |
|---|---|---|---|
| #0493 | Arceus | Normal | 720 |
| #0890 | Eternatus | Poison/Dragon | 690 |
| #0150 | Mewtwo | Psychic | 680 |
| #0249 | Lugia | Psychic/Flying | 680 |
| #0250 | Ho-Oh | Fire/Flying | 680 |
| #0384 | Rayquaza | Dragon/Flying | 680 |
| #0483 | Dialga | Steel/Dragon | 680 |
| #0484 | Palkia | Water/Dragon | 680 |
At the other end, Wishiwashi (175), Sunkern (180), Blipbug (180), Snom (185) have the lowest totals.
Legendary, mythical and baby Pokémon
There are 71 legendary Pokémon, 23 mythical Pokémon and 19 baby Pokémon. All three groups are on by default. In a random team of six from the full list, the chance of getting at least one legendary or mythical Pokémon is 43.9%.
How the randomness works
The generator does not use the basic Math.random(). It uses crypto.getRandomValues, the random source browsers use for security, and a Fisher–Yates shuffle to draw a team without repeats. Every Pokémon in your filter has the same chance: with all 1,025 Pokémon that is 1 in 1,025.
Some numbers from the same data the tool uses:
- A random team of six has a 62.4% chance of containing at least one Water-type.
- From Gen 1 alone there are 14,888,600,755 different possible teams of six.
- Without “No repeats”, you need about 7,698 single picks on average to see every Pokémon at least once. With “No repeats” on, it takes exactly 1,025.
- “No shared types in a team” rejects any Pokémon that shares a type with one already picked, so a team of six covers 6 to 12 different types.
The Team check, explained
The Team check uses the current Pokémon type chart (Generation 6 onwards, with Fairy) to work out real type matchups for your random team:
- Weak / resist grid: for each of the 18 attacking types, it counts how many team members take super-effective damage (×2 or ×4) and how many resist it (×0.5, ×0.25 or immune). A red box means at least half the team is weak to that type and fewer resist it; a green box means half or more resist it and nobody is weak.
- STAB coverage: how many types are hit super-effectively by moves that share a type with the Pokémon using them (Same-Type Attack Bonus). It shows which types your team will struggle to hit.
- Biggest threats: the attacking types that hit the most team members super-effectively.
Dual types are multiplied: a Grass/Flying Pokémon takes ×4 from Ice, while a Water/Ground Pokémon takes no damage from Electric and only ×4 from Grass. Abilities such as Levitate are not included, because they depend on the individual Pokémon.
Challenge ideas with a random Pokémon team
Random Nuzlocke
Set Evolution to “First stage”, switch off Legendary and Mythical, pick the generations available in your game and generate six. Those six are your team for the run. Combine with “No repeats” if you re-roll after a faint.
Monotype run
Spin the Type wheel, press “Generate this type” and play through a game with only that type. Ice and Bug runs are usually considered the toughest; Water and Dragon are among the easiest.
Random battle teams
Each player generates a fully evolved team of six with legendaries off and battles with what they get. Compare Team checks before you start.
Draw a random Pokémon
Turn on Guess mode, generate one, and draw it from memory before you reveal the name. Or generate two and draw a fusion.
Pokédex quiz
Turn on Guess mode with a team of six. You see each Pokémon's types and generation only – guess the Pokémon, then tap to check.
Pokémon GO and Scarlet & Violet goals
Generate a few Pokémon from the generations your game has and make catching them your session goal.
Fun facts from the data
- The heaviest Pokémon is Cosmoem at 999.9 kg; the lightest is Gastly at 0.1 kg.
- The tallest Pokémon is Eternatus at 20.0 m.
- 9.2% of all Pokémon are legendary or mythical.
- Gen 5 (Unova) added the most new Pokémon (156); Gen 6 (Kalos) added the fewest (72).

Frequently asked questions
How many Pokémon are in the random Pokémon generator?
All 1025 Pokémon from Generation 1 (Bulbasaur, #0001) to Generation 9 (Pecharunt, #1025) – every species in the National Pokédex up to #1025. Each species appears once, using its standard form and its current typing.
Is the random Pokémon generator really random?
Yes. Picks use your browser's cryptographic random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues) and a Fisher–Yates shuffle, so every Pokémon that passes your filters has an equal chance. With no filters that is 1 in 1025 (0.098%). In one team, the same Pokémon can never appear twice.
How do I generate a random Pokémon team of 6?
Leave the count on “6 (a team)” and press Generate. Turn on “No shared types in a team” for better type coverage, set Evolution to “Fully evolved” for a battle-ready team, and read the Team check under the results to see which attacking types your team is weak to.
Can I get a random Pokémon from one generation only?
Yes. Tap “All” to clear the generations, then tap the ones you want. Gen 1 (Kanto) has 151 Pokémon, Gen 5 (Unova) has the most with 156, and Gen 6 (Kalos) has the fewest with 72.
How do I get a random Pokémon of a specific type?
Tap one or more type buttons. “Has any chosen type” returns Pokémon with at least one of them, “Has every chosen type” returns only Pokémon that have all of them (for example Water + Flying), and “Single-type only” keeps pure-type Pokémon. You can also spin the Type wheel and press “Generate this type”.
Are legendary and mythical Pokémon included?
Yes, by default. There are 71 legendary and 23 mythical Pokémon. Switch either one off in the filters if you want a fairer team for a Nuzlocke or a casual battle, or switch everything else off to get a random legendary.
Why don't I see Mega Evolutions or regional forms?
The generator picks species, so each Pokémon appears once in its standard form. That keeps the odds fair – otherwise Pokémon with many forms, such as Vivillon or Alcremie, would come up far more often than others.
Is this an official Pokémon tool?
No. It is a free fan-made tool. Pokémon and Pokémon character names are trademarks of Nintendo, Creatures Inc. and GAME FREAK inc. Oualator is not affiliated with them. The data comes from the open PokéAPI project.
