Manga Bubble Guide

Everything you need to know about manga speech bubbles — from basics to advanced styling

💬 What are Manga Bubbles?

Manga bubbles (aka speech balloons or dialogue boxes) are the containers that hold character dialogue, thoughts, narration, and sound effects in manga and comics. They transform plain text into visual storytelling by conveying who is speaking, how they're speaking, and where the sound is coming from.

Unlike Western comics that often use plain rounded rectangles, manga bubbles come in wildly expressive shapes — jagged spikes for screaming, wobbly outlines for trembling, cloud-like shapes for thoughts, and jagged electric forms for telepathy or psychic powers.

🌏 Manga Bubbles vs Comic Bubbles

🇯🇵

Manga Style

  • Expressive shapes — screams are jagged bursts, whispers are dashed, thoughts are cloud-like
  • Calligraphy-style fonts — Bangers, Comic Neue, handwritten markers
  • Vertical text — reading direction follows Japanese tradition (right to left, top to bottom)
  • Emotion-driven design — bubble style matches the character's emotional state
  • Electric/telepathy bubbles — unique to manga for psychic scenes
  • Thought bubbles are clouds — not solid shapes, with floating dots
VS
🇺🇸

Western Comics

  • Simple shapes — mostly ovals and rectangles
  • Clean sans-serif fonts — Arial, Helvetica, Impact
  • Horizontal text — left to right reading
  • Information-focused — clarity over emotion in bubble shape
  • Standard speech ovals — minimal variation
  • Thought bubbles — solid cloud shapes with dotted connections

🔤 Manga Typography Basics

Font Choice

Bangers for action/screams, Comic Neue for casual dialogue, Caveat for handwritten feel, Special Elite for typewriter/narration style

Letter Spacing

Manga often uses tighter letter spacing for a more authentic feel, especially in action text and SFX

Text Stroke

Text often has a thick white or dark outline (stroke-width) so it stands out against busy backgrounds

Vertical Text

For authentic manga reading, enable the "Vertical (manga)" option — text reads top-to-bottom, right-to-left

Sizing

Scream and SFX text should be larger and bolder; narration can be smaller and lighter

Alignment

Narration boxes typically use left alignment; dialogue uses center alignment for balance

BOOM! "Really...?" The city was silent...

🛠️ How to Add Speech Bubbles to a Manga Panel

  1. Set up the canvas

Upload your manga panel or artwork under Background, or choose a canvas preset such as Manga Page (1500×2100). The canvas resizes to fit an uploaded image.

  2. Add a bubble

Click a shape in the Bubble Types grid to drop it on the canvas, or drag it to the exact spot. Choose speech, thought, scream, whisper, narration and more.

  3. Type the dialogue

Double-click the bubble to edit its text, or use the Text box in the Properties panel. Pick a font such as Bangers or Comic Neue, set the size and color, and turn on Vertical (manga) for Japanese-style text.

  4. Aim the tail and style the bubble

Drag the green dot to point the tail at the speaker and choose a tail style. Adjust fill, outline width, opacity, shadow and halftone under Bubble Style.

  5. Add sound effects

Click an SFX preset such as BOOM! or POW! to place impact lettering, then resize, rotate and restyle it like any other bubble.

  6. Export or save

Download PNG, JPG or SVG from the top bar, or press Save to keep a project file you can Load later.

❓ Manga Bubble Generator FAQ

Is the Manga Bubble Generator free?

Yes. It is free to use, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many bubbles or exports you make. You can download PNG, JPG and SVG files straight from the page.

Which bubble types can I add?

There are 15 built-in shapes: speech, thought, scream, whisper (dashed), narration box, electric (telepathy), wobbly, round, square, burst, double border, off-screen (chained), heart, flame and pixel (8-bit). You can also upload your own image and use it as a bubble. Eight one-click sound-effect presets, such as BOOM!, POW! and ZAP!, sit under Effects (SFX).

How do I point a bubble's tail at a character?

Select the bubble, then drag the green dot near the tail to aim it at the speaker. In the Tail section you can also pick one of seven tail styles (triangle, curved, bubbly, jagged, wavy, needle or chained), one of eight directions, and set the tail's length and width.

Can I write vertical Japanese manga text?

Yes. Tick Vertical (manga) in the Text panel and the dialogue runs top to bottom. You can type Japanese straight into any bubble, and the SFX presets include ドン! and ゴゴゴ. Letter spacing, line height and a text outline are adjustable too, which keeps lettering readable over busy artwork.

Can I use my own manga panel or image as the background?

Yes. Press Upload Image under Background, or drop an image onto the canvas, and the canvas resizes to match its proportions (up to 1500 px on the long side). You can also pick a preset such as Manga Page (1500×2100), Square, Landscape 16:9, Portrait 9:16 or Instagram, or enter a custom size from 100 to 4000 px. A transparent background is available for PNG and SVG exports.

Which file formats can I export?

PNG, JPG and SVG. SVG stays sharp at any size and opens in vector editors. Use Save to download a project file (JSON) and Load to carry on editing it later.

Does it work on a phone or tablet?

Yes. On small screens the Bubble Library and Properties panels slide in from the sides with the ☰ and ⚙ buttons. You can drag bubbles with one finger, pinch to zoom the canvas, and double-tap a bubble to edit its text. Save, Load and Export live in the ☰ drawer.

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. The editor runs in your browser, and the tool does not send the pictures you add or the files you export to a server.

Can I undo mistakes, and are there keyboard shortcuts?

Yes. There are 50 steps of undo and redo (Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Y, or the buttons in the top bar). Ctrl+D duplicates the selected bubble, Delete removes it, the arrow keys nudge it by 1 px (10 px with Shift), Ctrl+S saves the project and Ctrl+E exports a PNG.
